Hi

Can anyone help identify this problem with my 770 and, hopefully,
suggest a fix.

Model is 9549-1AO (the original 770 - P233MMX), 3 and a half years old
so out of warranty. I've had it from new. (It's my 2nd ThinkPad, I had
a 760CD before that which, so far as I know is still going strong!)

The LCD illumination switches off without warning. So far as I can
ascertain it is totally random - ie I can't find anything to cause it.
Some days it happens frequently, other days it hardly happens at all,
sometimes it will work OK for several days. I say it's illumination
because you can just see the image on the screen. The best way to bring
the illumination back appears to be Fn+F4 to blank the display and then
use any key to switch it back on. Sometimes this works, sometimes it
does not work and frequently the illumination just flashes. I've also
tried rebooting, using the reset button and initializing the BIOS but
none help.

At first I thought it was a software problem because it started shortly
after I upgraded from Win95 OSR2 to 98SE, possibly connected with power
management as use of Fn+F4 sometimes results in the hard drive powering
down but without any delay. Switching off as many of the power
management features as I can makes no difference.

Driver updates make no difference. I've installed the latest BIOS update
and most of the latest drivers [1].

I have searched the IBM web site for any reference to this problem but
without success. There are references to screen blanking in the BIOS
fix lists but I don't think this is a blanking problem. The document
"TP General - Considerations for Windows 98 across ThinkPad systems"
also refers to a number of display problems but none seem quite the same
as my problem and none of the suggested fixes help.

[1] I use modem drivers v2.36 (V.90 v2.516) as I found I get a faster
connection than with v2.60. I also found video features v6.45.45 gave
me problems so have one back to an earlier version.

I will very much appreciate any help.

TIA
