Following up on this, on mornings when the computer area of my
apartment is cold, I see a reddish screen that clears quickly, and
on mornings when the area's a bit warmer (e.g. I forget to turn the
heat down), it doesn't happen.

I will take Denis's advice and let it ride, it may be that I'll
replace the TP600 before the screen goes completely. (That's the
main reason I don't want to put money into it if I can avoid it).
