I have an old 365C that I want to use as a print server. I set up Win98SE on
it (using 98lite from www.98lite.net since it's only got 24Mb)--I'd tried
Win95 but it wasn't reliable on this machine. Win98 is running fine except
for one thing: The display doesn't turn off properly. It tries to turn off
the display after the timeout, but instead of turning off the backlight as
it should, it goes to a black character mode screen with a blinking cursor.
I want to get the backlight off completely.
Fn+F3 doesn't help--it puts the machine in standby instead of turning off
the display. I tried experimenting with the monitor settings in the Display
control panel, but nothing made any difference.
IBM's website doesn't show any updated Win98 display drivers for this
machine.
I tried attaching an external monitor and pressed Fn+F7 a couple of times to
switch to it, and that does turn off the TFT backlight. This works whether
the monitor is off or on, as long as it's connected. I don't want to leave a
monitor attached to the machine, but since a monitor without any power does
the trick, this implies that I should be able to make a VGA shorting plug to
fool the machine into thinking a monitor is attached. I don't mind turning
off the display manually.
I've got the VGA connector pinout and can experiment with this easily
enough, but I wonder if anyone has already tried such a thing--or has any
other ideas.
Thanks!
