As I lurk on this list, I see frequent advise to those with problems to
send in their machines to easyserv.
When I was very new to Thinkpads I sent in two machines ( both
still under warranty) to the Memphis service facility.
The first a 760ED U9A had been dropped and had a small crack
in the left rear of the lower case.
The cost estimate on this was well above what I could purchase a
bare-bones NOS machine for so I declined to have it serviced.
I later figured out that the only problem was that the little piece of
plastic that pushed on the keyboard switch to say the the keyboard
is closed was broken off.
The second machine would not recognize the floppy.
The cost estimate on this was so high (new system board) that I again
declined to have it repaired.
As it turned out, the only problem was that the floppy was disabled in
(PS2)
software.
I have just purchased three 770x/y machines from a downsizing auction.
They haven't arrived yet.
One of these ( I'm told ) shows no physical damage but has a tag that
says it "won't boot up".
It is still under warranty for about one more year.
I've haven't had much luck with warranty service in general
and have been burned badly by Western Digital, ( take my advice
and never let them charge a drive to your CC on the warranty drive
swap).
I cost me almost three hundred bucks to swap one new junk hard drive
( street price $99.00) for an even worse piece of crap rebuilt hard
drive.
So my question is, qiven by bad luck,: should I try one more time
to send this in for repair or is this likely to just become "three
strikes, yer out!)
Thanks again to the members of this list, it is GREAT!
