Forrest,
I have a couple week old x21 and had essentially the same issues you faced -
thoughI new from the start that I wouldn't be runnig Windows native on
the thing.
I haven't been able to get it to boot from Flash - either in the special
flash slot or in a PCMCIA slot with adapter. This is really
disappointing, I expect Thinkpads to be better thought out than that.
The best way to proceed is to put the drive in another machine. I
bought a little adapter for covnerting the laptop harddrive connector to
a fullsize IDE and power connectors. The adapter was about $10. You
should be able to find them using google.
You should be able to install Linux onto the drive using a desktop
machine - I don't know about Windows, I think at least W2K and W2K+2 (or
whatever) are picky about being installed on the hardware that they will
run on.
I'm running VMware on my x21 inorder to support W2K, this works quite
well adn makes it a lot easier to manage Windows and Office - I simply
installed them inside VMWare on a desktop machine and transfered the
virtual disk over.
The good news is once it is going, the x series is a nice laptop.
