Hi Joe, hi all,

As this is my first post to the list, please let me first introduce myself.
My name is Francis Auquier, I live in Brussels, Belgium. I've been using TPs
since 1993, the year I bought a TP750C as my main computer. It was great,
and one of the very first colour laptops with a large TFT screen (at that
time of course). It finally died a few years ago (does not boot at all any
more - any hint anyone?).

I am now using a Dell desktop as my main machine, but could not resist
buying a new TP one and a half year ago (390E second hand).

The only negative aspect I see in the 390E is its weight. Otherwise, it is
quite perfect.
My 390E has the following specs: Pentium II 300 MHz, TFT 13.1", CD-ROM,
built-in modem, runs Windows 2000.
Whereas its parts cannot be changed as easily as in my TP750C (its keyboard
could be lifted, giving instantaneous access to the battery, the hard disk
and the diskette drive), it is still upgradable, at least if you do not have
to change a disk unit all the time (anyway, I did not use that possibility
in my TP750C really often).
For example, last year I upgraded its RAM to 256 Mb, changed the hard disk
(originally 3.2 Gb) to an IBM TravelStar with 20 Gb, installed two Xircom PC
cards (ISDN & Network), etc. Its setup is thus up to my needs now, and that
could be done easily. Moreover, I find that a Pentium II 300 MHz is still
enough for most standard computing tasks, even today.

So if you have the possibility to buy a TP390E now, I would say go for it,
unless you need a laptop that you need to carry everyday in public transport
(though I did this exactly for a few weeks in Russia, with a good
backpack!).

Cheers,

Francis
