Gordan,
I was reading on techtv that they actually saw the preview of lindows
and had said that they do not consider it vaporware any longer.. Forget
the launch date but it is this year.. Ill try to find the write up on it
but I am sure if you goto www.techtv.com and search for lindows you will
find the write up.. Id also check out cnet.com or zdnet.com
Forget which one is the software one anymore

Hello,

When I started this thread I have this in mind. I do not need new OS
without productive software. I have several starts into the Linux world
but without success mostly because of lack of good
text/presentation/spreadsheet software (in this order). Also converters
from MS Office are the most crucial thing. Now I am waiting to see what
will be with Sun StarOffice 6.0 (now in closed beta, expecting in 2Q
this year) www.sun.com/staroffice. For now I was not satisfied with it.
his application is multiOS software. There also some other suites for
Linux like KOffice and Gnome Office but in development stage. Also
because I am MS "convert" clone of Outlook is something that I need.
www.ximian.com . The name of software is Evolution and with plug in even
with MS Exchange support (corporate requirement).

To have native Windows applications under Linux first choice is Wine
www.winehq.com. On this site you can find also Windows applications with
grades of compatibility. Second choice is vmware for Linux
www.vmware.com, commercial application which is working as new virtual
machine on your computer and requires installation of Windows. Also you
have installations for other OS so you can try Linux on Windows computer
with proper version of vmware. Third will be LindowsOS, or some other
name because MS is suing because of copyrights. I have mixed fillings
about this project.. For now this is on vapourware stage. It will be OS
for both LInux and Windows applications. I must admit that I am very
suspicious about this software because they are asking money just for
preview. It is not big amount ($99/year) but... It is obvious that
hackers (I do not mean crackers, but in positive way) will test and
discover the truth behind it if it is for free. I do not want to tell
that this is fraud, but up to now all articles were about idea (which is
very good) and not about the software. If this will work, definetely I
will consider purchase. This is my opinion based on facts available up
to now.

But because this is on the end ThinkPad mailing list we must not forget
IBM http://oss.software.ibm.com/developer/opensource/linux/. On this
site you can even find MWave support for Linux/BSD.

On the end www.linux-thinkpad.org

MY choice for my TP 770Z will be Suse 7.3 PRO, StarOffice 6.0, Ximian
Evolution ( in 90% of my daily work I am using this software on Windows)
and some other Linux proprietarily software.

Best Regards,

Gordan
