This weeks deal from OfficeMax is 50 @ $1.99 after rebate.
I really wonder thou, about just how safe our data really is on these.
One of the many really bad parts of our "World economy" is that items
like this end up being made if not in exactly the same factory (many brand
names), at least by
the same process.
I can remember when the first 3 1/2 HD floppys first came out they were ten
bucks each.
Now they are as low as a dime or so.
Sounds great, but your data is probably toast after as little as three
years.
I've had floppys stored in several locations, even in my bank safety deposit
box for
several years..
Over two-thirds of these (high-density) are now bad (flaking oxide).
The same is true with those once expensive data tapes, junk after about five
years.
These things were supposed to last a long, long time.
The only good part is that on most of these I did retain hard copy listings
and
if I had to, I could scan them back in.
The crazy part of this is that I have some even older low-density disks ( 5
& 8 in.) that are still fine.

It really bothers me to think of how many people are trusting their family
photos to CD-Rs.
How do we know what will happen to those as they age?
Some plastics can do some strange things over time and you don't find out
about it until to late.
