My recently re-installed 770E (Windohs 98se) has a similar problem. The PCI
Bus Master IDE controller has the yellow exclamation and reported a resource
conflict (15). I followed the usual M$ troubleshooter guide but nothing
sorted the problem. Eventually the troubleshooter said that it was just an
irritation rather than a hard fault (or some such), and to ignore the
reported problem. I did and the TP apparently works fine.
Maybe no help to you at all, but had to get it off my chest...

Subject: 560x stuck in compatibility mode

Hi All:

I just received a 560x, when it first got to me. It had no operating
system,
(someone did a "sys C:" so it would boot to Win95 prompt. I flashed the
bios to the latest. Then did the "initialize". The I proceeded to install
Win98.
It seemed to go OK, but In device manager Under -Disk Drives- only the
generic NEC Floppy Disk is shown, No hard drive at all. Under -Hard Disk
Controllers- the Primary IDE controller Has a yellow exclamation point.
In PROPERTIES the device status shows " This device is either not present,
not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed. (Code
10.)
Try upgrading the device drivers for this device." It passes all the self
tests on the IBM setup page. Does it require special drivers? I'm lost
with this one. It works in Dos compatibility mode. This was a fresh
install,
but it seems like bad drivers. Why would Win98 have corrupt drivers?
I also have a 560 with Win95 it has no problems. This was Win98 first
Edition, I also tried Second Edition same problem. Any one else run into
this? Any way to cure this problem? TIA

Mark

Subject: [TP560X, maybe others] Windows Update warning

Today I visited Windows Update to see what was new for my W98SE system.
It offered me a new driver for the Intel bus master HD controller on the
system, and in a moment of temporary insanity and uncharacteristic
trust, I gave the go-ahead .
DO NOT DO THIS!

The driver is (a) not compatible with the Thinkpad, (b) sends your drive
system into compatibility mode, and (c) is nearly impossible to remove
(all the usual tricks, eg expunging driver database and deleting the
devices in the device manager in safe mode, don't work). Fortunately,
Windows Update stores backup information deep in a subdirectory, and
while they include no documentation as to how to actually restore the
backup drivers, I was able to figure it out after considerable effort.

I expect this 'improved' driver will be suggested for many ThinkPads of
the era. Keep away from it!
