One 'feature' of W9x is that once this problem appears, a flag is set in the registry and even if
you solve the hardware mixup W9x won't let you get out of compatibility mode.

In the registry, see if HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\IOS
has an entry NOIDE. If so, delete it.
