Windows XP - Out of System Resources?

Greetings everyone:

        On both my desktop and thinkpad, it seems that Windows XP will
either crash opening programs or will not run additional applications
because it says out of resources. The ThinkPad's all have 512MB of RAM in
them while the desktops have 1 GIG of RAM. Anyone have any ideas what's
happening and a workaround? VMWare seems to cause problems too.
