Well, IBM came after me for $200 (that I didn't owe them, BTW...)

The questions wasn't whether one can break the law with impunity, but rather
whether there was a
law broken, and I don't think any lawyers have spoken up on this as of yet
in this list. I do get the impression that several
listers are assuming that whatever the law is, it should be something that
makes sense - what a strange assumption!

BTW, w/r to another point that has been raised on this thread: The Author's
Guild believes we shouldn't have the right
to sell used books, and is trying to pressure Amazon for doing so:
