Well, as long as the 2640 matches a 560 then you know what model it is.
I believe the last 3 digits refer to options. I don't think I've ever
heard of two different (numeric) models sharing a type number (first 4
digits). By the way, a quick web search on 'thinkpad 2640' showed that
some flavors of 560Z were indeed 2640s.
I had a similar situation with a 600E. The type was originally AAU or
something, because it was some special model sold without HD, but after
the retailer 'built it', I think they called it a CCE. Maybe it was the
other way around.
Of course, if you were trying to find out all the details of the unit,
and not just whether it is a 560, then this still doesn't help.
