I had a Thinkpad 390x 2626-FOU. I put a 20gb IBM Travelstar in it and it worked just fine. I didn't need a bios upgrade or anything. I even filled up the drive to make sure it wasn't going to crap out after reaching a certain cylinder.
Are you sure the 6gig is good? Is it new?
