I agree. This was thrashed out some weeks ago, and additions to Mini-FAQs
agreed. In future, could we just direct (or copy) these posters to the
appropriate statements with no assumptions - implied or otherwise. It's
nice to have colourful characters on what could be a bland and techie list,
but this got embarrassing.

Well, I'm glad you figured it out, Douglas. I can imagine losing all
your
data because of a mishap of this sort could be quite distressing, and I
would
feel for anyone in such a situation. For all the pious talk about being
responsible about passwords and not doing this or that, learning hard
lessons,
and so on, I would still say we are all human and can make mistakes - in
which
case all the pious talk in the world is of no help for the immediate
situation.
And I think presuming people who have password difficulties to be
thieves
is of no help at all, creates acrimony, and lowers the tone of this list.
Surely, if one list member believes another possibly to be a thief, the best
response is simply to say nothing at all, to refuse to offer help or
suggestions. But if you can't absolutely prove that they are a thief, I
think
reading them a lecture or patronizing them is inappropriate.

                         Regards,
