Hello everyone,

This is my first post to The List, so bear with me.....

I purchased a 560E used (from usedlaptops.com) and it's been great. So
great that when the hard drive began to fail (many bad sectors) I bought a
Travelstar 10GB drive to replace it. It wasn't until after I got the drive
that I learned it's not just plug-n-play. After an entire day messing
around with the drive and various IBM software, I finally got it to work.
The only "problem" was that I have to install the OS from floppies, and all
I had was Win95. So, I had to partition the 10GB drive into 5 2GB
partitions. Thus, my first question is: how can I boot from a PCMCIA CD ROM
with the 560E? This way, I can use Disk Manager to put one partition on the
drive and install Win98 from the CD ROM.

Now for the bad part. I hadn't screwed the hard drive into place because
it's a pain and I wanted to make sure it was going to work before I put it
all back together. Since it was working, I went to put the one screw into
the rail that holds the HD in place. Machine was turned on and booted up.
This probably wasn't a good idea. Machine locked up and now does not
recognize either drive (the new or old). Wants a floppy as soon as it
boots. I'm thinking I baked the controller. So, second question - is it
repairable? Or should I pick up another 560E and use this one for parts?
Without the HD, power supply, CD ROM, or floppy drive they're pretty
inexpensive.

Thank you,
Jim Stoltz
