severel possible causes..
among these are:
1. bad app.. see memory leak comment from david..
2. file fragmentation..
3. some other "app" is hogging cpu time..
4. disk full..
5. a worm is sending the KLEZ worm out to your entire e-mail address book..

what i would do FIRST is open task manager and see what is hogging the cpu
time..
and
take a look at the traffic on my connection to the internet..

then check free space..
see what the swap file is doing..

you did not say which version of windoze you're using.. :-)
so many places to look, so few hours in the day..!
