For anyone snooping the archives, to disable Windows Explorer from
showing graphics and web page thumbnails, right click in the
files/folder window pane, click on "View as Webpage" uncheck "as web
page" for that.
If you like this feature for folders containing graphics, you may be
successful using "Folder options" and set the preferences to handle
folders as you set them.

One other 'fluff' thing you can turn off is the preview capability of
Windows Explorer. You know, when you click on a file (like a graphic)
on the right pane and Explorer generates a thumbnail representation in
the middle area. That tends to waste a bit of time while reading the
file in. I can't give you exact directions on how to disable this, but
I assume it is under 'Tools... Folder Options'.
Good luck!
