The context I'm assuming here is that the user has some older programs that
don't run under XP. So either the user doesn't want to or cannot upgrade.
So in other words the question is: "Were there any programs that ran under
2000 but required an upgrade for XP?". The answer is: Absolutely. Off the
top of my head I know that the ATI DVD player, Norton Ghost 2001, Novell
Client soft ware and ZoneAlarm versions prior to 2.6.357 required this and
considering the changes to some of the libraries and API. I would not be
surprised if a lot of software requried this.
Personally, I found that having USB support, Disk defragmentation (NTFS
tends to perform badly when fragmented), Access to WMP > v6 and proper
Direct X support (especially having access to proper DirectVideo API
support!) was enough to get me to purchase Win2K. However the registration
system will have me putting off XP as long as possible.
