760XL PCMCIA weirdness redux

Thanks to those that responded to my previous problem with the onboard
PCMCIA slots on my 760XL. Turns out the problem was Win2k-specific -
after reformatting and installing Win98SE instead, it's working just
fine. To prove to myself that I hadn't screwed something up in the
Win2k setup, I repeated the 2k install, and once again the NetGear
wireless card would not connect when placed in the onboard slot.

Furthermore, I tried an SMC wireless card as well, and it displayed
exactly the same symptoms. So I'm forced to conclude that there's
something about the PCMCIA subsystem in the 760XL that Win2k (or the
drivers for these two cards) just doesn't play well with. So it looks
like I'll be sticking with Win98 after all.

But my experience with the SMC card has prompted yet another
question...

The SMC card physically cannot be inserted into the PCMCIA slots of
either my 755CSE or DockII. The "mark/space" ratio of the left-hand
(or front) edge of the card is different from both the NetGear card and
my 3Com 3C589 NIC - the plastic lip is wider than the other two cards -
making it impossible to insert into anything but the Cardbus slots on
my 760. SMC tech support assures me that the card is indeed PCMCIA not
Cardbus, but it is 3.3V, not 5V.

So my twofold question is: is this physical incompatibility mandated by
the 3.3V requirements of the card, and what are the additional physical
differences (if any) that would identify a Cardbus card?

Thanks in advance,
