Windows 3.1, 95, 98, and ME all have their roots in real-mode DOS. Their
design makes them more susceptible to a misbehaved app or driver crashing
the entire system.
Windows NT, 2000, and XP are protected mode OS's and while they have their
problems, they are much more stable.
We have several servers at our office, running Windows 2000 Server and NT
Server 4.0. These servers just run; we have had several instances of 3-4
month uptime between boots. When we did boot the machines it was do to a
scheduled maintenance task (such as installing a new app.) A properly
configured NT/2000 box will be a very stable platform (rivaling Linux, but
probably not quite as stable.)
To say that 98 or ME is more stable than the NT based OS's (NT 4.0, 2000,
and XP) really shows a lack of experience with both operating systems.

Subject: RE: [560x] Running Win2k on it...
Shouldn't Win98, with all it's problems (who ever
heard of a finished program that won't start or shut
down?) be considered the beta OS and ME a finished
product?
I can never understand why anyone would like W98,
which crashed all the time but not like the improved
version, ME. That's not logical. Sure, 98 seemed like
a big improvement over Win95 when it first came out
but that's just because Win95 was so bad! I guess a
lot of you are afraid to try anything better, like ME
or XP and will always be stuck in the past.
I have never found W2K to be stable, if Pat prefers
W2K over XP for stability there is definitely
something wrong with the way he installed or is using
it.
