I know this sounds too simple, but did you try Fn-F7, so that the LCD is the primary, and *only*
device? Technically, entering the BIOS setup from Fn-F1 should activate all displays connected
(including the LCD), which sounds somewhat like the symptoms you're having, except that it doesn't
do this when you enter setup. I have a 32MB module in mine, and I'm using my old 701CS now
with no problems (I was using a 701C, but I spilled wine on the keyboard, and am waiting
for a new one to arrive).
