I don't know what the error messages mean but unplug the phone cord
from the Thinkpad and plug that into a phone - if you don't get a dial
tone then, the cord is no good.
If the cord is good, on my 755 there is a little piece of plastic that
has a USA style phone connector on one end and it connects to the computer
on the other. I can see mine by lifting the keyboard. It has gotten loose
in mine and then of course the modem stops working. Check and see if it's
something like that happening in yours. The idea behind this little piece
is they can have connectors for other countries just by changing that one
cheap-o item...
