I have never used Win 3.1 with a NIC in a 701C, but here are
some thoughts.
Win 3.11 (for Workgroups) is much better than Win 3.1, no? I'm
not the one to be saying this, though, because I only ever used
Win3 under OS/2.
It's good to have a battery for your 701C.
The current BIOS (revision "O", dates from 1995) is very good
and stable. It fixes problems with earlier BIOSes. For
example, in some earlier BIOSes, jiggling the computer would
bring it out of suspend. So my 701C would magically come on
inside its backpack on a carseat! Of course, if you don't have
a battery, that's not likely ever to be a problem for you
I do not recommend plain Win95.
The 701C runs well under Win95a (=Win95 + SP1 + all the fixes
that repair what SP1 broke).
The 701C runs well under Win95b (aka OSR 2, I think).
It has been theorized (by somebody whose opinion I trust) that
the 701C will run best under win98lite. See www.win98lite.com
Normal Win98 or Win98SE not recommended by me.
It has been reported here that a 40 MB 701C even runs Win2K,
albeit very slowly.
10BASE-T PCMCIA NIC Cards I have used with success, no
problems, under Win95 (a and b) on a 701C are:
Linksys EC2T (or is it E2CT ?)
3Com Etherlink III 3C562D/3C563D (includes a 33.6 modem)
IBM Home & Away (includes a 14.4 modem which can be
deactivated!)
In fact, I was using the Home & Away yesterday under Win95a in
a 701C on a Win2K network. Frankly, I have never had problems
with Win95 networking, but lots of agony with Win2K networking.
Where would we like to send you today?
Networking has always worked efficiently on the 701C. For
example, on a 10BASE-T network with a 133 MHz desktop, I have
backed up the HD from the 701C over the network onto an old
Mitsumi 2X CD-R with never a coaster.
A couple of caveats about the Home and Away. It needs a
firmware tweak to run under Win95a, and if you want to run it
under Win95b, you have to tweak it back! Also, the dongle it
comes with cannot run in the upper slot of the 701C's PCMCIA
because of the butterfly keyboard. It can only run in the
lower slot and thus impedes or eliminates access to the upper
slot. However, perhaps you can use a different dongle, as
shown in the photo of:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2032178307
The dongle on the right is the one that the Home & Away comes
with.
In that auction, TWO Home & Away cards went for $5.50 plus
shipping. If you are able to make bargains like that, you will
soon have enough money saved up to buy a battery for the 701C.
Swap meets?
