I got a new one from eBay for $35. I am suspicious of the 'after a drop'
bit. The inverter card is unlikely to fail with 'G's, but connectors may
loosen and backlight tubes may break. Needs a strip to examine. Did the
battery charge fault appear at the same time?

That's what supplies the power to the backlights.
They are NOT cheap, the one for that unit is $773 from IBM!
