More about this upgraded 133MHz ThinkPad 701C (which benchmarks report is about as fast as an 82MHz Pentium, so Maximum Upgrades
tells me).
On this machine, with a 1.2GB hard disk, Windows 95 took about 40 seconds or so to boot after the POST. (I stopped the clock when
the hourglass changed back to an ordinary cursor.) Taking the advice of others on this list, I bought a copy of 98Lite, and
installed the "sleek" version of Windows 98SE. Installation went smoothly, and the result is a very snappy Windows 98SE that also
takes about 40 seconds or so to boot. 98 is definitely more stable than 95, so I think this was worth the effort. For the first
time, the machine seems completely usable, and I'm very pleased with the hardware and software upgrade.
