You don't necessarily lose - keep elevating the problem; you might *start*
at "Executive customer service," which is less brain-dead than EZ-serve;
they once helped me with a lemon 701 (both EZ-serve and 'regular' customer
service were unhelpful, exec cust service gave me a new machine). I'd give
you my contact there, except he's been promoted - fellow named Sam
Palmisano.

If you don't have the energy for that route, then you should start
proceedings in the 'gripe' channel - eg, send TheRegister.co.uk, John
Dvorak, etc pointers to this thread (eg,

original post). The behavior is sufficiently bizarre to attract some
attention.
