BlankMy TP380Z is aging, and I'm considering a TP23. I'd like to lay out my thinking and ask for any critique in the contemplated purchase (new, at about $1900 on IBM's EBay bid site). I'm committed to TPs: this will be my third.
As a seminary teacher, my chief software is Nota Bene, a sophisticated word processor known to work well with its Greek and Hebrew (and Cyrillic) alphabets, along with an integrated bibliographic management system, on this level of machine. I also use simple spread sheets, lots of internet access, simple data bases. I'm not a user of games. I do put together Power Point slide shows for classroom use, and I expect such use to grow considerably (so, a 60MB drive would be welcome). I incline more to W2K than to XP, disliking the restrictions and the emerging bugs. I use MSOffice 2K also. Highly important to me is the expected backup capabilities using the T23's CDRW/DVD combo drive. Wireless would be welcome, but I have no immediate need for it and wouldn't be inclined to pay extra for it.
My questions:
1. Any gaps in my thinking here? Considerations I've omitted?
2. Would the T23 combo drive really give me a dependable backup system using CDRoms I can produce quickly and store elsewhere?
3. I know MS will give up on W2K in June 2004, but for some years afterward online help will be available. I rarely need it. Any reason nevertheless to bolt for XP?
4. I don't mind refurbished TPs: is there a dependable source for them that would allow some recourse in event of trouble?
Thanks for any advice.
