I once spent a few hours each evening for five weeks tutoring a
Japanese ophalmological surgeon on the finer points of American slang
and verbal aggressiveness (to counter his feelings of inadequacy at
international professional conferences when his native conversational
rules prevented him from boasting about his exploits or pushing his
own opinions). For homework, I gave him a slang dictionary and told
him to study the entries from A to C. The day after I gave him the
book, it sounded as if he called me "Bimbo" when he opened the front
door, but I didn't have time to wonder about the strange greeting,
because he practically dragged me into the living room of the house
where he was staying. This time he made it a question: "BIMBO???",
pointing at the television, waving the dictionary and looking to me
for approval.

And there was Sally-Jessie Raphael, interviewing a couple of teenaged
girls about the deep psychological reasons behind their penchant for
engaging in recreational sex with hundreds of less-than-close
acquaintances. They were enjoying the limelight tremendously, flirting
coquettishly for the cameras. Too bad they couldn't see Kenji dancing
around, victoriously hollering "BIMBO!!!" back at them.
