i know for a fact that the linux fdisk programs can mark a partition on
non-primary hard discs bootable.
you might try the Knoppix LiveCD - it has very good hardware support, and
isn't all that hard to work with - boot it, then use the command-line
fdisk to mark the pc card disk active. i suspect you can make it work,
that way...
