Hello,
I used to regularly boot my IBM PC PalmTop 110 from a PCMCIA card hard disk,
as well as its internal solid-state disk and PicoFlash (predecessor to
CompactFlash) slot.
Of course, this computer was specifically designed to boot from these
devices and had support for treating them as ATA devices built right into
the BIOS, so you could run FDISK and FORMAT against them, just like a
"normal" hard disk drive.
In order to make your IBM 105MB PCMCIA Hard Disk startable, one of the
partitions on it must be marked as "Active." This is normally done with
the IBM PCMCIA-ATA Setup Disk which comes with your PCMCIA Hard Disk.
It sounds like you did not get a copy of this diskette with your hard
drive. If you like, I would be happy to email you a copy--it is about
200KB of files.
As a cautionary note, it probably would be a good idea to temporarily
unplug your internal 2.5" ATA hard disk drive before setting up the PCMCIA
Hard Drive, just to make sure that the Setup Disk configures the 'right'
hard disk drive.
Regards,
