It sounds like you're trying to use the AC adapter as a form of
battery?
That won't work, the AC adapter doesn't store power. When you want
to use regular power ("mains" if you're in Europe), you need to
plug the AC adapter into the wall and the other end into the
ThinkPad.

There might be a battery in the computer already, it would be a
flat thing visible from the bottom of the computer, the battery is
about 3x5" (x1/2", but you can't see that). It might be working,
it might not. Try plugging the AC adapter into the wall (and into
the ThinkPad) and leave it like that for a few hours. Then shut
down the ThinkPad, unplug the AC adapter from the ThinkPad, and see
if you can power up the ThinkPad again. If you can, there's a good
battery; if you can't, the battery is dead (or if this an empty
hole in the computer's bottom, there's no battery ;)
