My (now old) 770E had no modem so I have been using a V.90
hardware PCMCIA modem since. Works much better than the
built-in Xircom Win modem in my A21p. I suggest disabling
the Mwave (did that with even older thinkpads) and getting a
real PCMCIA modem (not win modem). Connect speed and
reliability are much better at least in my experience.
Another up side is that a hardware modem can be used without
problems with Unix (linux or Sun Solaris x86 in my case).
