Hello,

I had an IBM PalmTop PC110 for a while, but sold it because it was
sitting unused after a couple of years.

It was a 486SX-based system which came with a small (4MB) on-board
solid-state disk, 8MB of RAM (upgradeable to 20MB), two type-II PCMCIA
slots and a PicoFlash slot (predecessor to CompactFlash) all of which
could be booted from, an X-Jack like modem, and a small, calculator-style
membrane keyboard and small passive-matrix LCD screen. An optional dock
allowed you to connect a keyboard, mouse, monitor, and floppy drive.

The system was a joint venture, I believe, of Ricoh and IBM.

It came with the Japanese version of IBM PC DOS and PersonaWare, a
PIM-type program. Amongst the many interesting things, it could double
as a telephone using the built-in modem, microphone and speakers. I
believe Dynamism also sold a version with a cellular card for use as a
mobile phone. Also available was a DOS-based web browser called Web
Boy.

To the best of my knowledge, no one has produced a computer with comparable
features in a smaller package.

A lot of power in a small space for the time, but I found the keyboard
difficult to type on for extended periods, and the display was difficult
to read due to its size and dimness.

Eventually I upgraded to a Ricoh Magio, a big brother to the ThinkPad 235,
which I still use for email and word processing.

If you're interested in the PC110, I'd suggest joining the Yahoo! Group
for it, which is located at:

   http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/pc110/

It is a fairly low-volume mailing list--at least compared to this one!

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky
