The 51U has PCI video and does not directly support DVD playback.

I have a TP600 (2645-51U) with a 266 Pentium II. I also couldn't play DVD properly until I bought a Margi DVD-to-go card. I got a factory-reconditioned one direct from Margi (much cheaper than new) and it works absolutely fine. Some DVD playing software I tried didn't use the card but Windows DVD player on 2000 Professional works very well.
Just a couple of tips about the card. First, it has to go in the bottom PCMCIA slot on your laptop or it won't work. Second, often the sound is switched off when you try and play DVD. Check the sound setting on your Windows volume control. Also check the sound setting on the Margi DVD Player that comes with the card. I agree with Steve that the player itself is poor but I found you have to install it and set up the sound settings with it even if you don't use it as a player.
Setting up the card was a bit of a nuisance but my elderly TP plays DVD (and MPEG-2) really nicely with it.
