Sigh thanks. I really don't want to do that! But I guess I have no
choice. I wish they had installed it.
Thanks for the link! I'll call tech support to walk me through it. My
fear is that things won't fit back together well. I emailed IBM and had
an answer in an hour, they offered to take it back and install it. I'll
see when I call tomorrow.

Actually, the T40 is quite a bit more complicated. The mini-pci resides
under the palm rest. There are about 12 screws to remove on the bottom
of the machine. You must remove the keyboard, hard drive, and palmrest
(including the ultranav). It involves removing the plastic sticky covers
over some screws.
It's not that difficult, but takes about an hour or so the first time
you try it.
I think this link shows the procedure:

I haven't seen the T40, but it would be very surprising if it were any
different from any of the other ThinkPads with mini-PCI slots. Simply
look on the bottom of the machine for a rectangular door that is
fastened with a single Philips screw. There may be two of them, one for
the memory and the other for the mini-PCI slot.
There's no disassembly required beyond that one screw.
When you install the card, you should find two antenna cables with tiny
round connectors at the end that plug into the mini-PCI card.
