[Thinkpad] Thinkpad 600 BIOS Problem with new Hard Disk

I have a Thinkpad 600 using the IBET53WW BIOS. The battery is dead, much
like most other batteries that came with this model. However, since I
recently bought a hard disk (a 15gb Hitachi), my laptop gives me an error
174 with this disk only. Other drives I have tried (5gb and 1.2gb) seem to
work fine without any errors. I have tried using the Hitachi utility to
adjust the hard disk size to 8gb and even 2gb (on an older p133 laptop), but
I still get Error 174.

My question is, would this problem be rectified with a BIOS update? My BIOS
is only one down from the current version. Updating it also seems tricky
since I cannot easily afford a new battery. I saw some posts in here about
updating the BIOS using phlash.exe, but since there is no platform file for
thinkpad's, and since the file extensions are different (.fl1 and .fl2 vs
.fl1 and .fl3), I am not willing to risk this.
Any suggestions? I really can't return the drive, as it does work, just not
in my system, and I really would like to get this working.
