[Thinkpad] 770 battery doesn't work

I have a 770 (9549-1AU), which is long out of warranty,
and the battery doesn't work at all. When the 770 is plugged
into the wall and turned on, the battery indicator always
shows 0%. If I unplug from the wall, the unit immediately
shuts down.

At first, I figured this must be a dead battery, so I ordered a new battery.
When I installed it, it would only charge to something like 60%.
Thinking the battery was defective, I returned it and got a replacement.
The replacement at first charged to 100%, but a few days later,
it didn't hold a charge at all, i.e., 0%. I still have the last battery
installed.

So now I'm not so sure that the battery is the problem,
and maybe it's a problem with the charging system.
Any idea? Any low-cost suggestions that I could
try?

Thanks in advance.

Marvin
