I am not sure I understand.
First go into ThinkPad Utilities and see that the serial port is enabled. It
should be Com 1. Sometimes the PCI WinModem defaults to COM1, in which case
your devices would not be able to access the serial port.
You may need to reset the modem/port in the PS 2 commands.
The modem/port settings in the 600X/570E are a real b*tch to get right
sometimes. Most likely not a hardware failure, since you can hot plug a
serial device. It is therefore hard (but not impossible) to blow out a
serial port
