The huge cache on the new disks is a great win, *if* the file
you are working on is contiguous such that the controller scoops
up other parts of it before the OS asks for it. In that case, I could
see a 5400rpm large cache drive beating the smaller cache 7200
disks.

But when you are using a complicated file system with things
all over the place, nothing beats the gain from the faster rotational
time of the 7200 rpm disks. When compiling OpenBSD I noticed
a several minute drop, just from switching from 5400 to 7200.

I think it depends on just what you're doing. The cache does
help out, but rotating the disk faster is still the best thing. What
I'm waiting for are the 100G disks at 7200 rpm. I've now heard
my first whispers that some form of 100G disk exists...
