I think you are using the wrong operating system them (or live in a
hotter climate than Britain ;) ).
On my TP600X (with NetBSD 1.6) the fan only comes on at full blast (a)
when I do a lot of compiling, or (b) we have a heatwave (the
temperature reached 30C a few days ago - the fan was on at max all day
long).
The rest of the time the fan blows gently, or not at all.
I suspect it is a combination of ambient temperature, and how
agressively the operating system uses the idle instruction (NT4 seems
reasonably good at keeping the fan off, as well).
