The T40 has two memory (RAM) slots. Instructions on how to instal memory
in either slot can be found in the hardware maintenance manual (HMM).
Get it from IBM´s website:
<http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-46464.html>
it is useful anyway.
I called the guys at tech support and they had no idea. They said
that it does
in fact support up to 2 gigs. But they couldnt explain to me where
the other
ram chip is. I mean, that other 256meg of ram has to be somewhere?
AFAIK, in standard configurations, the T40 comes with 500 MB RAM in one slot and
has one free slot doesn´t it? (Or are there models with two 256 MB modules installed?? Where do the 256 MB come from?)
I have a T40p with 500 + 500 MB = 1GB RAM.
(The 1GB memory modules were, and still are, prohibitively expensive (in
Germany).
I figured that I will get a new Thinkpad before I need more than 1GB
RAM. For you, that may be different, depending on your needs, of course.)
If you really have two 256 MB modules in your T40, you will have to
exchange at least one of them.
You can get a 500 MB RAM module or a 1GB RAM module and instal it in the
2nd slot for a total of 1 GB or 1.5 GB, respectively (or 768 MB/ 1.25 GB
in case of 256 MB modules installed already).
Or so I think; you might want to check with IBM, or with Bill Morrow
from the TP list, whether you can mix different RAM modules in your
machine.
The T40 does support 2GB RAM.
In order to have 2GB, you have to instal 1 GB modules in both slots, and
in doing so remove whatever module(s) is/are in the slot(s) originally.
