It sounds like your friend has some wireless driver/utility package left
over from his Windows 2000 installation, and that is taking over instead of
the built-in Windows XP support.

I would try this:

1) Use System Restore to set a restore point.

2) Uninstall all wireless client software and drivers.

3) Reboot Windows and let it detect the wireless card and install its own
drivers.
