[Thinkpad] 600X PIII-500 slower than PII-400?

I use a program called Info Select, which is a PIM and free-form database.
I had been using it on a desktop computer, a Pentium II-400 with 256M RAM
and a 6 gig hard drive. I recently acquired a Thinkpad 600X, Pentium
III-500 with 256M RAM and a 20 gig hard drive. My Info Select program runs
noticeably slower on the Thinkpad. On the desktop, searching the database
takes no more than a second, while on the Thinkpad it's 7 to 10 seconds. Is
there something about the 600X that I have not properly configured? It
seems strange that the Pentium III-500 runs this program slower than a
Pentium II-400. Thanks.
