I get that effect when the destop is trying to access something on the
network that isn't available at the moment.
Did you drag pointers to stuff on your network to your desktop ?
If so, try putting all the pointers in a local folder temporarily, and see
if that clears up the problem.
If so, try changing the icon on the pointers to icons that are local to your
machine, and then putting them back on your desktop.
