I've had excellent luck with a PC card reader on my desktop, for up to a
few hundred Mb I use a flash memory card.
This gives you a solution that will work with any notebook with a PC
card slot (including MACs).
I also have an 8 Gb IBM travelstar external hard drive with a PC card
connection that is big enough to copy the entire hard drive and can then
be copied to through the desktop card reader. Look for a "travelstar 8E".
The desktop card reader fits in a 3.5" drive bay and has a card that
plugs into one of the card slots on the motherboard.
The built in reader costs a little more (maybe $50), is faster but can
be a pain to set up since Windows has to manage the IRQs for the card
drives that aren't always there. Mine is a "SCM Swapbox" with an ISA
card. They also make a version with a PCI card but that one's supposed
to be more particular about IRQs.
I also have a card reader that plugs into a USB port, it's cheaper
(about $20), easier to set up and slower than the built in reader.
Look for a Lexar model GS-UFD-20-SA-TP, it reads smart media cards as
well if that's something useful for you.
Let me know if you have more questions
