Hi David,
I know a little about what you're talking about. I don't believe
it's the dc inverter card ~ more than likely just a bad battery.
Those particular batteries have 12 cells inside them wired in a
really weird configuration (both in series and parallel) Anyhow,
It's just the battery. Basically if it doesn't detect (meaning
on the lcd) as having any percentage of power then there you go.
On the other hand if it does show at least a percentage, then
some of the battery cells are basically fried and the amount of
juice running through the entire pack is not enough to power up
or maintain the laptop powered for a period of time.
My advise, get another battery and that should take care
of the problem.
I've seen where a 760/765 will only operate on battery and not ac/dc
adapters ~ the more evident reasons have been a loose connector where
the trapezoid plugs in. I have never seen one yet where the ac works
and the battery doesn't and it's anything other than the battery to
blame.
Believe it or not, I sold quite a few of those (Li-ION) types for
about 2 years. I rebuilt them from scratch and installed new L-ION
cells. I have a high regard to Li-ION type batteries. I remember
once putting one together, inadvertently hot wiring it totally wrong,
and burning a hole straight through the bottom of the laptop ~
surprisingly, I would of thought the damn thing would of exploded if
I hadn't caught it in time. Pretty powerful batteries!
Re the trapezoid plug where you have an extra two pins, you got
me there. I always thought that there was; positive, negative,
ground, and the fourth being a signal that the laptop and adapter
uses to communicate. But I'm not really certain about that.
