Over the weekend I tried the card in an i1400 which having the full
installation of WIN Me was able to install and run the 3-Com utility
that makes the connection with the hub.
Incidentally the clock on the i1400 is off which is why the date was off
on some posts.
The utility starts automatically and draws a cute little picture of a
computer and a 3Com access point with a line connecting them if there is
a connection, a little padlock around the line if the connection has
security enabled and so on.
Well the good news is that the card stayed connected overnight (after I
switched the i1400 to "always on").
The bad news is that the 3-Com utility seems to be required and I'm
guessing that it's the program that was upset at the lack of Active X on
the 560.
I'm going to look for some simpler drivers, they are probably on the
install CD and I may be able to manually install them without the GUI
utility. Failing that I'm hopeful that some Linux hacker has found a
simpler driver.
As a last resort I could always install Active X although with only 800
Mb of C drive I'm reluctant to add anything I don't need.

technology is the answer, what was the question?
