[Thinkpad] TP600 questions

TP600 currently has original hard disk:
IBM DTCA-24090 - 4090MB - 7944Cyl - 16Head - 63Sec.

I have tried two other disks:
Hitachi DK228A-65 - 6490MB - 13424Cyl - 15Head - 63Sec.
IBM TravelMaster DBCA-204860 - 4.86G - 10068Cyl - 15Head - 63Sec.

Neither of these disks will boot? These disks will boot in a desktop using
a laptop to IDE adapter. There does not appear to be any way to configure
disk parms via BIOS.

Attempts to book from CD have mixed results:
        - Win98SE does not boot
        - Mandrake 9.1 does not boot
        - RedHat 7.2 & 7.3 does boot

BIOS version is 91H4147 (09/25/98). When I download newer versions, the
programs will only write image to floppy - that can be done on another
system, but my TP600 has no floppy drive. Are there alternative procedures
for upgrading BIOS?

Does the BIOS update software allow saving current BIOS version? Can I
come back to current BIOS version if I find I'm worse off with a newer one?
