RE: [Thinkpad] CPU Upgrade for 770Z - Anyone Tried PIII 500MHz after Switching 64MB Onboard Memory to 100MHz?

I am the proud owner of a ThinkPad 770X upgraded to a PII 400Mhz.

Based on my research and understanding of upgrades of the TP770,
I suggest that you upgrade the HD to a fast 5400RPM TravelStar GNX
("pixie dust). This faster HD will definitely work and have a positive
impact on overall system performance.

I currently use ThinkPad 770X, with the upgraded CPU and upgraded
TravelStar HD as the server for my home network. I use a the
SelectDock I for the CD and the SCSI support. This docking station
has fewer bays and slots than the SelectaDock II/III, but I think
that the TP770 is easier to work with on the SelectaDock I.

Windows 2000 SP3 + most of the Microsoft patches. I applied
all of the IBM drivers for the TP770X/Z series for Windows 2000.
This system runs very well.

I have had (2) problems in the past year with this 4+ year old machine:

1. The IBM Drive Fitness utility said that the HD had a problem and should
be replaced. It never failed but I did replace it.

2. The LCD inverter failed and I had it replaced (for less than $100 parts
and labor)

In my opinion, the TP770 series was one of the best ThinkPads ever made.

Steve

Just a quick CPU upgrade status update. I still haven't received my
eBay-purchased 770Z (I'm actually having some communication/delivery
problems with the seller), so it will be a couple more weeks before I get
around to trying this upgrade (to PIII 500MHz with a new 100MHz SO-DIMM
installed on the motherboard). I am still planning on reporting to the list
after I try it.

Phil.
